Board Policies

Adoption Date: Jan 11, 2000

It will be the responsibility of the Superintendent to recommend to the Board the highest quality of administrators and teachers available for the efficient operation of our school program.  The Superintendent or his/her designee shall notify each employee of his/her selection and shall be responsible for completing the employment process together with the required information and documents.  The personnel department shall keep accurate records of all employment and records of service.

The Corporation wishes to reaffirm its moral and legal commitment to full support and affirmative action toward equal opportunities in employment. 

The Board’s role in hiring qualified personnel is prescribed by policies and bylaws which define its authority, responsibilities, and actions.   Included in these policies and bylaws are the following statements:

1. Board members shall perform their official duties in a manner free from any prejudice or self interest.

2. The Board affirms its policy not to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment or promotion because of race, color, creed, national origin, physical handicap, age, or sex.

3. Board members will refuse to discuss personnel matters or any other confidential business of the Board in his/her home, on the street, or in his/her office.

4. Each Board member shall resist every temptation and outside pressure to use his/her position as a Board member to benefit either himself/herself or any other individual or agency apart from the total interest of the school corporation.

5. Each Board member will refuse to make any statements or promises as to how he/she will vote on any matter which should properly come before the Board as a whole.

6. Each Board member will refuse to participate in any irregular meetings or meetings in which all members do not have the opportunity to attend.

7. The Board will give the Superintendent full administrative authority for properly discharging his/her professional duties, and also by holding him/her responsible for acceptable results.

8. The Board will take form action/or vote only upon the recommendation of the Superintendent in matters of employment or dismissal of school personnel.

9. Above all, the Board will strive to win the community’s confidence that all is being done in the best interest of students.

In regard to hiring principal and Superintendent’s cabinet level positions, the Board will adhere to the following process:

1. The Board’s role in hiring qualified personnel will follow the prescribed policies and bylaws which define its authority, responsibilities, and actions.

2. The Board will receive from the Superintendent the notification of a vacancy.  The process for recruitment of qualified personnel and a timeline for filling the position will be shared with Board members.  A job description and salary range will be provided.

3. A screening process including collection of written information and interviews will take place.

4. The Superintendent shall arrange for a meeting between the Board and the final candidate for principal and cabinet level positions on a date prior to the date of Board action.
