At halftime of Friday's Giants football game, athletes and student leadership of the MCS Champions Together teams will be presented with a banner to displayed at the school, signifying that  MCS fulfilled all of the Project Unify goals 2015-16 school year. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Dick Lootens Stadium at MHS.

Champions Together is  a collaborative partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics, and officials from that organization will be on hand to present the banner on Friday. This award recognizes schools that embrace the Champions Together partnership and do exemplary work in the areas of student leadership, respect for people with intellectual disabilities, inclusion, Unified Sports participation and fundraising to support the goals of Special Olympics.

Marion Community Schools' Champions Together program encompasses the Unified Basketball season, which features teams from all of Grant County’s public schools, as well as the Unified Track season, when the Giants compete with schools from around the area and at the state level with a tournament system just like any other varsity sport affiliated with the IHSAA. Last school year it also featured the Little Feet Meet, a fun event that featured various track and field activities for children of all abilities.

The accomplishments from the 2015-16 school year that the Unified Champion School award recognizes at MCS include:
  • Students at Marion High School organized an R-Word campaign, during which the entire student body was given the opportunity to sign a banner stating that they support using “people first” language. Using hurtful, demeaning words to describe a person’s differences is unacceptable at MHS.
  • The entire district, including all MCS schools, battled each other in “Jar Wars.”  As a district we raised more than $1,500 in an effort to donate money for Special Olympics events in Indiana.
  • MCS hosted a Unified Basketball event at MHS with all five districts participating. Each school played two games in front of a large crowd of students and adults. Team photos were taken and the athletes performed in front of family and friends. This was led by a group of student leaders who respect the lives of all student-athletes and desire to have inclusive sporting events.
  • Last spring, MHS participated in the IHSAA Unified Track sectionals and state finals. Several of our student-athletes earned their first varsity letter for their participation and hard work.
