MCS elementaries will help "Stamp Out Hunger"

News Blog Category - News Next week, Marion's elementary schools will be participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers' Annual Food Drive. It will be a friendly competition to see which building can collect the most!

From Monday, May 8, through Monday, May 12, you can help "Stamp Out Hunger" for our local friends and neighbors by bringing in canned / boxed shelf-stable food! See your school office for more information.

Here's a list of suggested items, to give you ideas of what to bring in. (Donations are not limited to these items. This list is just to give you a general idea of what sorts of things are needed! Think about the kinds of things YOU would like to eat and share with others, but remember to try to keep it healthy, too!)
  • Cereal / granola (low-sugar items like Cheerios are great!)
  • Canned soups and stews
  • Pasta
  • Sauce (marinara, enchilada, other assorted cans and pouches of sauces that help make meal prep quick and easy)
  • Canned fruits and vegetables (those little plastic cups of fruit like apples, peaches, etc., with no sugar added are great!)
  • Dried fruits (apricots, plums, cherries, raisins ... lots to choose from!)
  • Applesauce (individual serving sizes are nice ... and low- or no-sugar is best!)
  • Canned or dried beans (black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas/garbanzo beans ... so many good choices!)
  • Peanut butter (or other nut or seed butter)
  • Jams and jellies
  • Rice (brown rice is a great option)
  • Oatmeal
  • Other grains (like wild rice, quinoa)
  • Cornmeal / cornbread mix
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Nuts / seeds, like pumpkin or sunflower (unsalted is more healthy!)
  • Crackers (whole-grain is best!)
  • Shelf-stable (non-refrigerated) juice boxes (100% fruit juice is best)
  • Shelf-stable (non-refrigerated) soy or almond milk
  • Tea bags (green and herbal teas are great)
  • Vegetable oil (olive oil, canola oil)
  • Dried herbs and spices
