News Blog Category - News The Marion High School JROTC will host its largest-ever Raider Challenge this Saturday, April 22. More than 200 cadets will compete in 10 events designed to test their level of physical fitness, strength, and team work at the MHS athletic complex.

“During Raider competitions, the cadets will face a series of traditional and other ‘crazy’ events that are designed to push cadets to their physical limits while challenging them to work as a member of a team,” said Lt. Col. David Farlow, Marion High School’s senior Army instructor. “Working in 10-person teams, the cadets will face many challenges, including a 1-kilometer litter carry, an obstacle course, a spider web, the terrible tires, and many other challenges. The cadets will no doubt get hot, dirty, and wet, but they will have a great time.”

The Marion event is the only Raider Challenge hosted by a JROTC program in central Indiana. With 18 teams coming from Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, it promises to be an exciting event.

For assistance, the Marion JROTC obtained the help of non-commissioned officers from the Indiana National Guard and U.S. Army Recruiters to serve as the graders for the Raider events.

“I am so excited,” said MHS senior Joey Lawrence. “Throughout the year we have gone to other schools for Raider competitions. But this event is in our home, and we are prepared to win!”

The Marion JROTC cadets will field two teams for the competition in addition to providing all the support requirements to facilitate such an event.

The competition will begin promptly at 8 a.m. at Dick Lootens Stadium at Marion High School and is expected to conclude by 3 p.m. Members of the public are welcome as spectators, and there is no admission charge.

News Blog Category - News Do you know a Marion High School alumnus who deserves recognition? Nominations for the MHS Hall of Distinction 2017 inductions are being accepted through May 10, 2017.

The MHS Hall of Distinction gives lasting recognition to alumni who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of Marion Community Schools. It also serves to help inspire current students to aspire to similar success.

Any MHS alumnus who graduated at least five years ago and who has made substantial contributions to the achievements of Marion Community Schools or whose exemplary actions reflect honor on MCS is eligible for nomination. The Hall seeks to honor men and women who have distinguished themselves through superb accomplishment on a local, state or national level in diverse fields of endeavor.

Non-MHS graduates may be afforded honorary status in the MHS Hall of Distinction.

Nominations must be made in writing and must be received by in the Office of the Superintendent, District Offices at Marion High School, 750 W. 26th St., Marion, or by email to pgibson@marion.k12.in.us, by May 10.

Inductees will be honored during MHS Homecoming weekend. The formal induction dinner is set for Saturday, Sept. 30. More details will be provided as the event nears.

News Blog Category - News McCulloch Junior High School’s academic team was the top scorer at a regional invitational on Thursday, and brought home the gold in three separate categories as well.

Marion students competed with teams from a dozen schools from around East Central Indiana in the Academic Super Bowl invitational at Delta Middle School in Muncie on April 6, 2017. Academic Super Bowl competitions at the junior level consist of four subject matter rounds (English, science, social studies, and math) and a fifth interdisciplinary round. Each year a theme is selected, and questions at the competitions center around that topic. This year’s topic is “The French Revolution”.

The Giants earned first place in English, science, and the interdisciplinary round. They were also among the top teams in social studies (second place) and math (fourth place). With this excellent performance, they earned the title of overall points winner as well.

The students who competed April 6 are: Carynna Aguila, Soren Bruehler, Mia De las Alas, Evelyn Detamore, Savannah Fry, Jaron Hofmann, Halen Munday, Vikram Oddiraju, Annika Sharlow, and Marisa Wallace. Coaches are Mike Halliwell (English/social studies), Brooke Detamore (science), and Alex Hornett (math).

Next up, the McCulloch team will compete in the state competition, set for April 29. McCulloch Junior High School and Marion Community Schools offer their congratulations to these outstanding students and their coaches, and wish them good luck at the state level!

The Academic Super Bowl competition is offered by the Indiana Association of School Principals. The IASP offers academic competitions to honor intellectual achievement, showcase students, and give their families an opportunity for involvement.

News Blog Category - News The Marion Band Boosters will host the Bunny Breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., in conjunction with the Million Egg Hunt set that morning at MHS's Dick Lootens Stadium.

The Bunny Breakfast will be inside MHS's Bill Green Arena. (Enter at Door 14, near the stadium.) There will be special appearances by the Easter Bunny!

Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, milk and juice. 

Tickets:
  • $5 adult (3 pancakes, 3 sausages, 1 milk, 1 juice)
  • $3 children ages 3 to 10 (2 pancakes, 2 sausages, 1 milk, 1 juice)
  • free for children 2 and younger. (1 pancake, 1 sausage, 1 milk, 1 juice)
Tickets sold at the door. Proceeds benefit the growing, award-winning MHS band program!

Marion Community Schools invites families of children who will be starting kindergarten next school year to come visit their elementary schools and get a head start on the registration process at Kindergarten Roundup, set for Thursday, April 13.

Families can attend one of two sessions set that day, at 1:30 p.m. or 6 p.m.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2017, can attend kindergarten in the 2017-18 school year.

The informational sessions will be offered at every MCS elementary school:

We hope to see all families of incoming kindergartners at this event that is just for them! It's a great way to help your future kindergartner get an introduction to the school building and staff. It's a low-pressure, informative session that's meant to specifically meet the needs of families with incoming kindergartners and their families.

What you need to bring: We ask that you bring proof of residence (like a utility bill with your name and address on it) if possible, so we can make sure you're at the right school. We also ask that you bring a copy of your kindergartner-to-be's birth certificate. You'll be beginning the registration process at Kindergarten Roundup, so we need that official document to certify your child is eligible for kindergarten. (If you cannot bring a copy of the birth certificate on this day, we can still begin the registration process, but we'll need you to follow up with us and provide that document before we can complete the registration process.)
