Marion High School Music Department earns ISSMA's top award

Publish Date: 05/06/2021

The Marion High School music department has earned the Indiana State School Music Association’s highest honor, the Total Department All Music Award, one of only seven schools in the state to earn the award this year.

Every year, ISSMA hosts several competitions for music students in the state. The All Music Awards are the culmination of those contests, and the music departments who earn them are among the best in the state.

“This doesn't happen without the support and encouragement from a lot of different people but more importantly, this doesn't happen without the students being willing to learn, rehearse, and perform in spite of all of the obstacles that we've all faced in our classrooms this year,” MHS Director of Bands Josh Huff said. “This was a big goal for our music students all year, especially after last year's impressive run was cut short due to the COVID-19 shut down.”

The MHS Music Department was on its way to earning the Total Department All Music Award last year before the pandemic. We’re so proud of these talented students and their outstanding teachers for regrouping, adapting, and finding success despite this year’s unique hurdles!

Take a look at some of the highlights of this school year’s Music Department successes:

  • 17 Gold ratings in the fall virtual ISSMA Solo and Ensemble competition
  • Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Jazz 1 and Virtuoso earned Gold ratings in the fall virtual ISSMA Organizational Assessments
  • 12 Gold ratings in Group 1 (highest difficulty) in the spring virtual ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, along with several other Gold ratings in Group 2, 3, and 4 categories.
  • Beginning Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Virtuoso, Innovations Show Choir, Wind Ensemble, Jazz 1, and Symphonic Band all received Gold ratings in the spring virtual ISSMA Assessments.

Any one of these accomplishments would be praiseworthy in such a difficult year, but to earn the Total Department All Music Award is truly impressive! Add that to the fact that McCulloch Junior High Music Department has won this award seven years in a row, and you can see why we say Marion Community Schools has one of the top music programs in the state!
