Marion High School Music Department earns ISSMA's top award

Publish Date: 05/20/2022

The Marion High School music department has earned the Indiana State School Music Association’s highest honor, the Total Department All Music Award, one of only 13 schools in the state to earn the award this year.

Marion Community Schools is one of only two school corporations in the state to earn the Total Department All Music Award in both high school AND the junior high / middle school / elementary category! (McCulloch Junior High has earned the award seven times in a row!)

Every year, ISSMA hosts several competitions for music students in the state. The All Music Awards are the culmination of those contests, and the music departments who earn them are among the best in the state.

“As the band director, I’m beyond proud of these students," said Joshua Huff, Director of Bands at Marion High School. "As the department chair, kudos to Mrs. Williams for having multiple groups earn the 'with distinction' rating all while continuing to lead and build our choral program. Additionally this award reflects the teaching of our colleagues from elementary through junior high. Truly it takes the entire team of music teachers to build this program!”

Take a look at some of the highlights of this school year’s Music Department ISSMA successes:

  • All four large groups (band and choir) earned Gold ratings in the spring ISSMA Organizational Competition
  • At the ISSMA Jazz Competition, the two MHS Jazz Bands both earned a Gold rating, and Innovations Show Choir earned a Gold with Distinction
  • Numerous Gold ratings in Group 1 (highest difficulty) in ISSMA Solo and Ensemble in both vocal and instrumental, along with several other Gold ratings in Group 2, 3, and 4 categories. Click here for details.
  • Marching Band earned a Gold Rating at the ISSMA Summer Showcase, including Gold with Distinction for visual performance
