The Marion Community Schools Head Start preschool program will be taking applications for the 2013-14 school year for children who are 3 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2013. The Head Start program is designed to serve low-income families, and children with disabilities.

Head Start is a federally funded three-hour preschool program; therefore, is it offered at no cost to families. Currently, there are five classes at the Tucker Career and Technology Center and one class at Frances Slocum Elementary School. The Head Start program serves all of Grant County.

A Marion Community Schools Head Start event this week will help its students who will attend kindergarten next school year and their families get a jump on that transition.

MCS Head Start’s kindergarten readiness event, “Down on the Farm: ABCs and 123s”, is an opportunity for parents and guardians to get information about Marion Community Schools and expectations at the kindergarten level, including the MCS dress code. A kindergarten teacher from Frances Slocum Elementary School will be speaking with parents.

With the 2014 Winter Olympics kicking off, students in Marion Community Schools’ Head Start preschool classes will be getting in on the excitement.

The fun (and Olympics-related lessons) will begin with an Opening Ceremony on Monday, Feb. 10. For the morning classes, the ceremony will be from 9 to 10 a.m.; for the afternoon classes, it will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

MARION (March 15, 2013) — At the annual Literacy Fair, Marion Community Schools Head Start students – and parents – learned all about the power of a story.

John McCracken, associate professor of education at Indiana Wesleyan University and a passionate proponent of storytelling and early access to books, kicked off the event Friday, March 15, 2013, captivating the kids in attendance with two tales, one about a thieving fish and the other about an overachieving tugboat.
