Based on updated guidance from state health officials, Marion Community Schools is updating our COVID-19 procedures.
- As of January 20, 2022, the Indiana Department of Health has lifted the order for asymptomatic quarantine after potential exposure in a school with a mask requirement for grades K-12. This means that anyone who would be considered a close contact within the school setting at Marion Community Schools will NOT have to quarantine if they do not develop symptoms.
- Because of this, Marion Community Schools will no longer be contact tracing based on individual identified COVID-19 cases. We will instead be issuing notifications to staffers and families when a COVID-19 case has been identified within a classroom (K-4) or a school (5-12).
Such notification does not necessarily mean a student is considered a close contact (defined as being within 6 feet or less for 15 minutes or more collectively throughout the day, within the 48 hours prior to the positive test or diagnosis, or if all are masked consistently within 3 feet). It does mean, however, that the student / staffer and family MUST carefully monitor for any symptoms to arise. If your student develops symptoms, please keep them home and inform your school. We encourage any symptomatic person to get a COVID-19 test. Please click here for more information about how to proceed if symptoms develop.
- COVID-19 guidelines are a multi-layered approach to help slow the spread of the illness. This new guidance from the state effectively removes one of the layers (contact tracing), which makes it more important than ever that we are diligent in mask usage and symptom monitoring!
- We will continue to utilize quarantines for preschool classrooms where masks are not used consistently when a COVID-19 positive case is identified, but the quarantine has been shortened to 5 days after the start of symptoms or the positive test (whichever came first).
What's stayed the same?
For anyone exposed to COVID-19 at home or any place else outside of school / at a school function the following guidelines remain in place:
Fully vaccinated: No quarantine if there are no symptoms. Extra careful symptom monitoring should continue through day 10.
Unvaccinated: Quarantine can end after day 5 without testing if there are no symptoms. Extra careful symptom monitoring and mask use at all times must continue through day 10. If someone in your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and you are unable to isolate yourself from them, your quarantine period begins when the positive person’s quarantine ends.
Students and staffers will be excluded from school if they test positive for COVID-19 or exhibit one or more of the symptoms of COVID-19 that is not otherwise explained. Once a student or staffer is excluded from school, they may return only when they satisfy the recommendations of the current quarantine guidelines.
Masks are required for all on buses and inside all Marion Community Schools buildings. Click here for more details on the mask requirement.
