A message from Principal Aguilar: Looking forward to a great year!

Publish Date: 07/19/2022

Dear Frances Slocum families,

It is my pleasure to welcome all students, teachers, staff, and families back for another GIANT year at Frances Slocum Elementary. We are all excited to have students back in our building with energy and enthusiasm. Our mission is to help every child feel welcomed, and connected. We strive to challenge each student to grow their academic abilities and achieve their highest academic potential. I am honored to work with amazing teachers and staff who spend hours planning and creating classroom activities to engage our students in learning.

Mark your calendar for our Back to School Open House on Aug. 8 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for you and your student to meet our teachers, and for you to complete your registration if you have not done so. You will also get important information about Title 1 services for all students and more, pick up your car tags if needed, pay your technology fee ($20), and pay your book fee or apply for assistance.

If you would like to simplify your experience at our Back to School Night, you can complete the following ahead of time through your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account:

  • If you haven’t already done so, complete your student’s registration for the 2022-23 school year (instructions can be found in the Enrollment section of marion.k12.in.us)
  • Apply online for textbook fee assistance (in your Parent Portal, select “More” from the list on the left, then select “Meals” to access the application)

Exciting new opportunities!

  • This year we will offer a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) class for all of our students! Students will take this class once a week, and we are excited about coding and robots!
  • Our Family Resource Room! Our goal is to get our students excited about learning, and we know that we can’t do that without family engagement. Therefore, we have opened a resource library for our families where you can check out academic resources (games, flash cards, and books) to take home. We are excited to see the immediate impact that we know these resources will have!

We are also pleased to inform you that breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all Marion Community Schools students this year. You don’t need to sign up for this option.

The first day of school for grades K-4 is Wednesday, Aug. 10. Classes at Frances Slocum start at 7:45 a.m. Students can be dropped off starting at 7:20 a.m.

Kindergarten will start late on the first three days (Aug. 10, 11, 12), at 8 a.m. After that, kindergarten will start at 7:45 a.m. along with the rest of our classes.

All students will get out early the first three days (Aug. 10, 11, 12). Dismissal on those days will be at 1:15 p.m. After that, all K-4 students will be dismissed at 2:15 p.m.

We know parental involvement in a child’s education is crucial to their achievement, attitude, self-esteem, maturity, and responsibility. I urge you to take part as much as possible in the life of our school. Please feel free to contact the school office or your child’s teacher with any questions or needs throughout the year.

We cannot wait to see you all again soon for the best year yet!

Principal Rianne Aguilar
