Two Marion Community Schools elementaries are having a friendly competition to benefit neighbors in need.

Frances Slocum and Allen elementary schools are having family Valentine’s dances next week, and admission will be a canned or shelf-stable food item, to be donated to local food pantries. The schools are competing to see who can bring in the most donations.

The dances are set as follows:

Mr. Scott Hoeksema is joining the staff at Frances Slocum Elementary School! As Elementary Administrator, his main focus will be on curriculum and instruction support.

For the last four years, Mr. Hoeksema has been focused on testing and classroom technology across the district. He has also previously served as principal at Frances Slocum and Lincoln elementaries.

Mr. Hoeksema, Principal Melissa Jessup and Assistant Principal Nate Miley are all very excited about the opportunity to help Frances Slocum students succeed!

MARION — Three Marion elementary school students, along with another formerly attending school here, earned high honors in the annual Symphony in Color statewide art competition.

Zoe Stiles, a fourth-grader at Kendall Elementary School, and Annie Moore, a third-grader at Frances Slocum Elementary School, along with her former schoolmate, Joseph Sawyer, who has since moved from the area, all earned Gold Ribbons at the state level in the annual contest that blends symphonic music and visual arts.

Mrs. Anne Liddick is taking the lead at Frances Slocum Elementary as principal.

Mrs. Liddick has been an educator in Grant County for nearly 20 years, and for the past year and a half has served as assistant principal at Marion’s Kendall Elementary School. She looks forward to new opportunities to work with the staff, students, and families at Frances Slocum.
