Ten Marion students earn outstanding solo awards at ISSMA jazz contests

Recently, the choral and instrumental jazz ensembles from Marion High School and McCulloch Junior High took home several awards from ISSMA’s annual district jazz competition. 

At the Indiana State School Music Association’s district jazz competitions on March 7 and 8, Marion High School had three ensembles competing, and McCulloch Junior High School had two ensembles competing. Here’s a look at the awards earned, and the students involved: 

Marion High School

Band

Two instrumental ensembles competed March 8 at Kokomo High School.

  • Jazz 1 earned a Gold rating in Group I (the most difficult division). 
  • Jazz 2 earned a Gold rating in Group III.

In addition, several students also earned Outstanding Solo recognition: 

  • Andrew Hancock, senior, two awards
  • Justin Peters, junior, two awards
  • Manuel Trejo, junior, two awards
  • David Graham, senior, one award
  • Damien Martin, senior, one award
  • Colin Royse, sophomore, one award

Choir

Virtuoso vocal ensemble competed on March 8 at Western High School and earned a Silver rating. 

Members of this group are freshmen Audrey Alsup, Isaiah Carpenter, Heidi Harshman, Destiny Mendez, RJ Slinkard, Adin Turner; sophomores Monica Burnett, Gabe Fisher, Andi Krause, Tammy Long, Shauntae Stroud; juniors Cassie Bucher, Mariana Castro.

 

McCulloch Junior High School

Jazz band

This ensemble competed on March 7 at Kokomo High School and earned a Gold rating. In addition, three students also earned Outstanding Solo recognition: 

  • Carter Beck, eighth grade
  • Cecilia Hancock, seventh grade
  • Autumn Spradley, eighth grade

Jazz choir

This ensemble competed on March 8th at Western High School and earned a Gold rating. In addition, two students also earned Outstanding Solo recognition: 

  • Cecilia Hancock, seventh grade
  • Skai Terry, eighth grade
